The 2021 »PetNat« Riesling presents a tangy, pear-yellow color. The nose initially suggests fruity notes of ripe red apple and apple cider, paired with a hint of vanilla. On the palate, fruity hints also dominate. Gooseberry and sour cherry meet green apple and fresh alpine currant. This is complemented by yeasty brioche aromas and a subtle salt note in the finish. The high yet very fine perlage, in combination with the elegant acidity, complements the taste picture and guarantees drinking pleasure with the first sip.

Vineyard Notes

The grapes come from several Rheingau sites. The Rheingau stretches along the Rhine in the cold shelter of the Taunus Mountains in the form of hilly vineyards. Due to the proximity to the river, the loamy and clayey vineyard soils are interspersed with gravel and sand. But also marl and loess can be found again and again. In Rüdesheim and at the high altitudes of the Rheingau, in Kiedrich and in Rauenthal, quartzite and slate weathered soils predominate for the most part. The Rheingau soils leave their signature in the wine in the form of fine melting and minerality.

Soil Type(s): loess and loess loams, tertiary marl soils and clay lenses

Production Notes

The translation "naturally sparkling" basically already reveals the peculiarity that makes this type of wine. While the wine is still fermenting in the tank, it is transferred to the bottle - with residual sugar and, above all, with the yeast. The wine finishes fermenting in the bottle and, due to the closure with a crown cap, all the carbon dioxide remains in the bottle building to a pressure of 2.1-2.5 bars per bottle (for comparisson Champagne is around 4.5-6 bars). Accordingly, some caution is required when opening the bottle! The yeast is still in the bottle and provides the natural turbidity. After it has sunk to the bottom of the bottle, the fermentation is finished and the "Pet Nat" matures for another 2-3 months on the bottle.

Fun Facts

PetNat is not yet very common in the Rheingau, one of Germany's most traditional wine regions. This is a rare treat!
