The 2021 Landwein Rhein Pinot Noir Rosé has a stunning yet soft, salmon pink color. Light herbal aromas, rhubarb compote, and a hint of red apple inspire thoughts of a warm summer day. On the palate, the rhubarb notes are even stronger, accompanied by strawberries and roses. Its creamy texture makes it perfectly quaffable and the gentle acid makes you want more!

Vineyard Notes

For the Landwein Rhein Riesling trocken we use grapes from the Rheingau and Rheinhessen. Due to the direction of flow of the Rhine, the vines grow mostly on south-facing slopes. The grapes are spoiled by the sun and can thus fully exploit their ripening potential. The diversity of the Rhenish soils gives the wines a pleasant freshness in addition to their minerality.

Soil Type(s): Loose and slightly sandy

Production Notes

First, the berries are pre-selected by hand and then harvested by whole cluster. The must is fermented cold and with pure yeasts in stainless steel tanks. This allows an optimal match with the wine type. After about two weeks of fermentation, the wine is kept on the full lees in the tank for about 3 months and is regularly evaluated for clarity, flavor, and aromatic development. Before the wine is filtered in February, another series of tasting evaluations decide how the wines are blended from the various sites into one bottling.

Fun Facts

German Pinot Noir, or Spätburgunder, has been seeing a steady rise in popularity. It was always popular in Germany, but these days the country is at the leading edge of the new regions for this delicate grape. Climate change has winners and losers, and which is which is very much unclear. Right now, Germany's northern climates that were traditionally too cold for Pinot Noir to ripen are becoming near perfect for the cultivation of this grape. The Rheinland (Rheingau, Rheinhessen, Nahe, Pfalz) is leading the charge. The rosé style is quite popular and Balthasar-Ress is certainly getting into the game with great success.
