More Chardonnay than typical in this release, this wine is not faint and definitely not shy. Spicy, lively, intense, there is a grandiose nature to the wine that is ostentatious but not garish. As Spiderman teaches us, with great power comes great responsibility. This wine could easily go off the tracks and become an unctuous floral/gingery monster. Instead, it has a creamy orangesicle mouthfeel that is bright, and playful. Not sure why we don’t pay wines like this more attention, oh wait not a lot of people make them and the ones that make them well, they are a well kept secret.

Vineyard Notes

These grapes were grown by two closeby neighbors of Castagna to their specifications. The Chardonnay comes from the district's oldest vineyard on soil which combines granitic loam and mudstone. The Viognier is grown on granitic clay at 400 meters. The harvest started in March with hand picking at optimal maturity directly going to the hand sorting table.

Soil Type(s)
Chardonnay- granitic loam and mudstone. Viognier- granitic clay.

Production Notes

Fermentation from native wild yeasts started on the skins and then the grapes were pressed to barrel. Totally barrel fermented from that point onwards, with about 10% new oak, but mostly 1 and 2 year old fine grain French oak. Natural malolactic fermentation followed, and the wine was then aged for twenty months in fine grain French oak, with two rackings. Bottled without fining or filtration.

Fun Facts

The Castagnas are members of ‘La Renaissance des Appellations’ an invitation only group of biodynamics producers started by the Loire Valley magnate/legend Nicolas Joly in 2003.
