Bright, salty, and complex Chardonnay that balances the classic Burgundy styles as if on a tight rope. Notes of hazelnut, yellow apple, and flint get more and more seductive as the wine opens up. Textural, yet emphatically energetic and lean. Let's be honest- if you like the extremes of this grape, try something else. This wine is about balance and harmony. It represents Chardonnay as looking through a mirror at the exact moment you realize you're an adult.

Vineyard Notes

Grown on the Jory Volcanic outcroppings covered by loess and the Missoula floods, this is one of the ideal places to grow cold climate Chardonnay. It is in close proximity to the Van Duzer Corridor and is one of the coldest parts of the Willamette Valley. The vineyard is farmed biodynamically and with meticulous care for the health of the grapes. No-till farming with a permanent cover crop are two ways to improve soil structure and it helps spread native fungi underneath the vines. Mycorrhizal fungi transport water and nutrients just below the soil to the places that need them most without most above even knowing they are there.

Soil Type(s): Volcanic Jory covered by Loess

Production Notes

When it was decided that a SOM Chardonnay would be made, the team all agreed it would be in the style of the great Burgundy houses of France. What they couldn’t agree on, however, was which great Burgundy house. There were two “camps” within the team: one that preferred the soft, round style of Domaine des Comtes Lafon and one with a predilection for Domaine Roulot’s crisp, angular wines. To solve this split in agreement, we decided to make this Chardonnay first in two separate styles, then blend the two to create a wine with both tension and opulence at the same time. The wine spent a year in 100% new French oak from Tonnelerie Damy.
