Vineyard Notes

Some incredible juice comes from the Zillah Ranch Vineyard. Planted back in the late 1970s to Riesling and Cabernet, today it is still one of the premier sites in the US for our favorite white grape. The red grapes have shifted to Syrah, but the original vines of Riesling planted 40+ years ago are still producing amazing fruit today. As vines get older, they produce less and less fruit. The same amount of nutrients and energy is expended across a smaller number of berries thus concentrating flavor and power. This is the case in the alluvial soil of Zillah Ranch. One of the benefits of the older vines is the depth they stretch their roots into the ground bringing up all the earthy mineral driven flavors of Washington with them. This is some of the best old vine Riesling on the West Coast!

Soil Type(s): Caliche (Calcium/Carbonate-Limestone)

Production Notes

Nothing crazy here! Harvested while the temperatures are cool, sulfur added to stop the fermentation yet keeping the sugar to balance the acid. It is aged in stainless steel to preserve the flavor of the grape itself. Fermentation is halted at 12 g/L but you really don't notice the sweetness except when it balances the searing levels of acidity.

Fun Facts

These grapes come from the original plantings from the late 1970s that produced America's most iconic bottling of Riesling (we won't say what- but if you think you know you're right!). It comes from America's 3rd official wine region behind Augusta, MO and Napa, CA!
