In the glass, the 2002 is golden and deep. The nose is dominated by ripe tropical fruits and dried honeycomb. Supple and tender kumquat, papaya, yuzu and apricot nectar characterize a sophisticated fruit profile. Wonderfully multifaceted with freshness and a good body, the wine finishes spicy and refreshing. A great example of a wine just hitting its prime.

Vineyard Notes

Following the great tradition of the monastery, Balthasar Ress exclusively cultivates Riesling vines on the vineyards of Schloss Reichartshausen, from which very classy and acidic wines are produced due to the sandy soil conditions. The vineyards are relatively flat and some are in the immediate vicinity of the Rhine. The vineyards cover 24 hectares of vines on alluvial gravel and alluvial loam with special climatic conditions favorably influenced by the Rhein.

Soil Type(s): Mostly sand with some loess and granite

Production Notes

The grapes are picked by passing through the vineyard several times in early October, harvested by hand and carefully transported to the winery in small boxes. This is followed by a cold soak maceration period of up to 12 hours before the wine is fermented using spontaneous native yeast. Fermentation is allowed to continue all the way to full dryness. The wine is aged mainly in used barriques and 600L barrels for a period of 18 months. The rest of the aging takes place in bottle in the cellars of the winery. Dry vinified selections develop an intense flavor and higher alcohol content.
