"Classic claret blend- red fruit, earthy and nice tannins"- Koerner Brothers. This is really a departure for South Australia! To harvest the grapes on March 1st- the neighbors must have been having a laugh. NO ONE does this in the Clare, they are 3 weeks to a month early. The result is brambly, blue fruit driven, honestly an old-world take on this blend. The texture is fresh, bright, and full of bright blue acidity. The tannins may be a bit more forward, but they are all asking the prettiest person in the room to the dance before others get the chance.

Production Notes

The grapes were 100% de-stemmed, retaining around 50% whole berry with no whole bunch. The free run and later pressings are combined and fermented in staibless steel in open air for 2 weeks, hand plunged daily. Then it is racked, and settled off gross lees for 7 days. The wine is aged in 2000L Slavonian oak Foudre for 12 months, then racked into stainless steel for 3 months more. No fining or filtering.

Fun Facts

Cabernet and Syrah (Shiraz) are two grapes that share a dirty secret- they have been blended together in France for centuries! Syrah and Merlot have a lot of the same fruit profiles, and are both great compliments to Cabernet, but in the cold climates of France- you needed to cultivate one or the other... Chateau Palmer of Bordeaux produces a unicorn "Historic Series" wine from Margaux Cabernet and J.L. Chave's Hermitage Syrah! Everyone in Australia makes this blend, the trick is to treat Syrah like Cabernet and to treat Cabernet like Merlot. The Koerners get this, leaving the end result a well balanced treat.
